How is the anesthesiologist bill calculated?

Anesthesiology fees are charged based on the Relative Value Guide developed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and accepted by most major insurance companies. The Relative Value Guide incorporates three types of “units” into the final fee:

•    Case Units: The number charged depends on the complexity of anesthetic management and the type of surgery you are having.
•    Time Units: The number charged depends on the duration of our involvement with your care.
•    Modifying Units: These are charged in special situations such as extremes of age, serious complicating medical conditions, and utilization of special monitoring.
